LifeLock for Seniors: Best Features and How It Keeps You Safe

With over 80 million users across 150 countries, LifeLock has been a key player in the identity theft protection market for almost 20 years. The company’s plans range from basic identity monitoring to credit protection, digital security (powered by Norton), and generous identity theft insurance coverage.

In the last decade, however, LifeLock’s reputation has taken a hit — including a $100 million FTC fine for failing to secure user data [*] as well as a recent credential stuffing attack that compromised the passwords of close to one million LifeLock users [*].

Another downside is the lack of a dedicated product made for seniors.

Since discontinuing the LifeLock Seniors plan, older Americans now need to choose one of LifeLock’s more expensive plans.

Issues aside, LifeLock still provides a high level of protection for seniors and younger Americans alike.

      • LifeLock Identity Alert system. LifeLock's identity theft protection engine monitors your most sensitive information and alerts you if your Social Security number (SSN), name, address, or date of birth are used in some credit and service applications. You’ll also receive alerts about unrequested address changes from the United States Postal Service (USPS), as well as if your name appears in public records or the sex offender registry.
      • Credit monitoring (one or three bureaus). All LifeLock plans include credit monitoring with Equifax. But you'll need to pay more to keep tabs on your credit reports at all three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
      • Credit reports and score updates. LifeLock offers monthly one-bureau credit score tracking (based on Equifax data). Members can stay informed about new accounts and credit inquiries on their reports, which helps detect early signs of fraud.
      • Financial account activity alerts. You can monitor your credit card, 401(k), checking, and savings accounts and receive notifications about cash withdrawals, balance transfers, changes in recurring charges, and large purchases.
      • Up to $3 million in identity theft insurance. If you become a victim of identity theft, LifeLock’s identity theft insurance will cover eligible costs, including lawyer fees, stolen funds reimbursement, and personal expense compensation.
      • Home title monitoring. If there is any unauthorized access to your property deeds or changes made to your title documents, you can get alerts about the activity.
      • Antivirus and VPN. A reliable virtual private network (VPN) can encrypt your online activity to make browsing, shopping, and banking safer — even on public Wi-Fi. With the Norton 360 bundle, LifeLock's antivirus software protects your phones, tablets, and computers from hackers, malware, and other malicious software.
      • Parental controls. These features include content filters and website blockers to ensure that your children aren’t exposed to explicit content and interactions with online predators, scammers, or cyberbullies. Parental controls are only available with Norton 360.

How Much Does LifeLock Cost For Seniors?

Compared to the best identity theft protection for seniors, LifeLock’s pricing and plan structure can be confusing.

New users choose between three levels of protection, whether or not to bundle LifeLock with Norton 360 for device and data protection, and how many people they want to protect. Lastly, you can choose to pay monthly or get a slight discount by paying for the full year upfront.

Here’s a breakdown of the best LifeLock plans for seniors, with pricing as of March 2024:

      Plan
      Cost
      Key Features
      LifeLock Select with Norton 360
Paid monthly: Starts at $14.99/month for the first year (individual plan)
Paid annually: $99.48 for your first year (renews at $149.99/year)
Basic identity protection including one-bureau credit monitoring, SSN monitoring, and up to $1 million coverage for lawyers and experts, plus $25,000 stolen funds reimbursement per adult.

With the Norton 360 add-on, you’ll also get security and VPN for five family PCs, Macs, and mobile devices
      LifeLock Advantage with Norton 360
Paid monthly: Starts at $24.99/month for the first year (individual plan)
Paid annually: $191.88 for your first year (renews at $249.99/year)
All of the features of the Standard plan, plus:
      • Alerts about crimes in your name
      • Monthly credit reports and scores
      • Identity lock for your credit file and payday loans
      • Phone takeover monitoring
      • Security and VPN for 10 family PCs, Macs, and mobile devices
LifeLock Ultimate Plus with Norton 360
Paid monthly: Starts at $34.99/month for the first year (individual plan)
Paid annually: $299.88 for your first year (renews at $349.99/year)
All of the features of the Advantage plan, plus:
      • Up to $1 million in stolen funds reimbursement per adult
      • Phone takeover monitoring
      • 401(k) and investment account activity alerts
      • Home title monitoring
      • Social media monitoring
      • Three-bureau credit monitoring
      • Security and VPN for unlimited family PCs, Macs, and mobile devices

AARP members can also get a discounted version of LifeLock that includes many — but not all — of the features on a regular plan. Most noticeably absent from the AARP plans are three-bureau credit monitoring and LifeLock’s $3 million insurance policy.

Regardless of which plan you pick, LifeLock’s pricing increases significantly after the first year — by over 50% in some cases. You must keep this in mind when considering whether you are getting protection that is worth the money.

🥇 Identity theft protection doesn’t have to be complicated (or costly). Aura’s all-in-one intelligent safety app provides stronger protection, faster alerts, and better value than LifeLock. Try Aura free for 14 days and see why it’s been rated #1 by Forbes, Money.com, and more.

How Much Does LifeLock Cost After Your First Year?

LifeLock’s family plan starts at $35.99/month or $221.87/year for basic identity monitoring only [*]. However, after your first year of service, your LifeLock annual plan will increase in cost anywhere from 30 to 50% or more.

      Plan
      Year 1 Cost
      Year 2+ Cost
      LifeLock Select with Norton 360

What Are the Downsides of Using LifeLock?

      • Security and privacy concerns. LifeLock has faced backlash in recent years over security breaches, failure to secure customer data, and questionable choices (such as auto-installing cryptocurrency mining software on customers’ devices [*]).
      • Sky-high renewal rates after your first year. LifeLock is one of the most expensive products on the market. The first-year promotional prices are tempting, but these plans increase by 30-45% or more when you renew.
      • Only one-bureau credit monitoring on most plans. If you want comprehensive coverage, it'll cost you more — three-bureau monitoring is only available on the most expensive price plan.
      • Not designed for protecting older family members. LifeLock’s family plans only cover two adults (in the same household) — making it an impractical choice for protecting grandparents and older family members. In contrast, Aura’s family plans cover up to five adults (and unlimited children) in different households.
      • Limited insurance coverage (compared to other services). The lower-tier plans offer limited insurance and reimbursement in the event of fraud. If thieves steal more than $25,000, you could be left with little support.
      • No automatic data broker opt-outs. LifeLock’s Privacy Monitor scans several dozen data broker sites for your personal information. But you must lodge opt-out requests yourself. LifeLock won’t handle removals automatically unless you pay for the Privacy Monitor Assistant, a separate subscription at $129.99 per year [*].
      • Lack of suspicious transaction alerts. Identity thieves can strike in many ways, such as targeting you via your lost driver's license or a data breach. If you don't have a monitoring service with reliable data breach notifications, you might fall victim to a bank account takeover without knowing it has happened. Some LifeLock customers report that LifeLock often doesn't alert them until weeks or months after the fraud has occurred [*].
      • Poor customer support. A lot of LifeLock customers vent their frustrations about the substandard support. In customer reviews, there are many complaints about long waiting times, misleading information, and broken systems that could potentially put your identity at risk [*].

Still wondering if LifeLock is worth the cost for seniors? Here are a few reasons why Aura is a better option than LifeLock:

      • Faster fraud alerts. Aura not only monitors your credit and financial accounts, but will also alert you to credit and identity fraud or suspicious activity faster than any other service. According to a 2022 mystery shopper survey, Aura's credit fraud alerts were up to 250 times faster than competitors [*].
      • AI-powered digital security features. Phone scammers use phishing and smishing attacks to steal money or personal data. Aura keeps you safe with an AI-powered Call Assistant that screens calls and blocks spam messages.
      • Better support (that’s available when you need it). Aura offers some of the best support in the industry, with 24/7 access to identity restoration specialists who can help you handle issues with creditors, vendors, banks, and government agencies.
      • More comprehensive family protection with more insurance coverage. If the worst should happen, each adult member on an Aura plan is covered by up to $1,000,000 for eligible losses due to identity theft (giving your family up to $5,000,000 in coverage).
      • Better value for more features. Aura keeps your entire family safe by monitoring the SSNs and credit files of your children and elderly family members. The platform also offers parental controls to protect your kids from online threats and predators. This level of protection isn’t available with LifeLock, even if you pay for the highest-priced plan.
