Frequently asked questions
What is a data broker site?
A data broker is a company or individual that gathers personal information about people from various sources, like public records, online activity, apps, and credit card companies. They then compile this data and sell it to businesses for marketing, research, and other uses.
What personal information do data brokers collect?
Data brokers and people search sites collect information including your:
- Personal details. This could include your full name, aliases, birthdate, employment details, marital status, bankruptcy information, property records, education information, health records, interests and affiliations, and even details about your family members.
- Contact information. This could include your phone number, email address, current and previous home addresses, and social media profiles.
- Online browsing and purchasing history. Websites and apps collect passive information from your digital footprint, such as your online shopping history, browsing data, and more.
How does Aura help?
Aura is an all-in-one solution that protects you against identity theft, fraud, hacking, and online scams. Besides the data removal service features, every Aura account also includes:
- Data breach notifications: Get alerts if your email, password, or other personal details are found in known breaches or large combined leak lists circulating on the Dark Web. These alerts may also include the breach source (if known).
- Identity theft protection: Track upwards of 130 pieces of your personally identifiable information (PII) across the internet, public records, credit files, and more. If your data appears in places linked to fraud or identity theft, you receive an alert with next steps.
- Credit monitoring with fraud alerts: Aura monitors all three major credit bureaus and on average alerts you to potential fraud in three minutes or less — that’s up to 665x faster than competitors like Norton.3
How does Aura keep my information safe?
When you sign up for Aura, your information is secured with 256-AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), the same encryption technology generally used by major banks and the military. We also offer account security options, including two-factor authentication (2FA).
Our data security practices undergo rigorous evaluation and validation by independent experts. Aura has earned an ISO 27001 certification and has successfully undergone third-party audits for the SOC 2 Type II standard.
Aura will never sell or share your personal information.
Can you opt out of data brokers on your own?
Yes. Data brokers including Spokeo, Whitepages, and Radaris, often have DIY opt-out processes. But each broker’s opt-out process is different and often time-consuming. Some require you to submit sensitive personal information to verify your identity.
Even after removal, your data can be added back without notice. This is why Aura’s data removal service regularly re-scans and re-submits opt-out requests.
What types of information does Aura remove?
Data brokers can have detailed personal information about you, including your name, address, phone number, email, age or date of birth, marital status, relatives’ names, job titles and employment history, mortgage or property details, court records, and even identifiers like IP addresses or device information. Aura sends removal requests to have this information taken down.
What information does Aura need to start the data broker opt-out process?
Once you sign up, Aura automatically starts the opt-out process to remove your information from 200+ data broker sites. You can improve coverage and speed by taking a few extra steps:
- Sign the authorization form so Aura can act as your agent for opt-outs.
- Add more details such as a middle name, state, phone number, or former legal name.
- Install Aura’s browser extension on Chrome or Edge, which lets us process opt-outs as you browse.
- Download the Aura app to enable assisted removals for brokers that are harder to handle.
Aura never sells your personal data and only collects the minimum information needed to process removals.
How long does it take for Aura to remove my information?
Removal request completions may take up to 30 days, though timing can vary by broker. Behind the scenes, Aura runs daily scans to check for your information, resubmits requests with brokers that are harder to process, and keeps you updated on progress as statuses move from “in progress” to “removed.”
Is Aura associated with any data brokers?
No. Aura isn’t owned by or affiliated with data brokers. It’s a privacy and identity theft protection service that works to remove your data from them.
How long does it take to manually remove myself from data broker websites?
Each data broker has its own opt-out process, so timelines vary. For example, Acxiom typically processes requests within about two weeks once you confirm by email, while others may take much longer. Handling this yourself may take up to 30 minutes per site — adding up to dozens of hours if your information appears on hundreds of data broker sites.
Aura automates the process. We submit requests on your behalf, track progress, and follow up with brokers that delay. To date, Aura has processed over 92 million removals, saving customers more than 23 million hours — about 21 hours on average per user. On a per-request basis, each completed removal represents roughly 30 minutes saved compared to doing it manually.
Which websites does Aura remove my information from?
Aura removes your information from a wide range of data brokers, people search sites, and marketing databases. These include some of the largest and most widely used sources of personal data in the U.S.
Here is the full list of supported brokers and sites as of January 2026:
Because broker coverage may change over time, the sites shown in your account or listed here may not always reflect the most current or complete set.
How often does Aura scan for my information?
Aura scans for your information every day, automatically checking where your data appears, updating statuses, and resubmitting requests to brokers that haven’t yet processed the opt-out.
All of Aura’s data broker opt-outs run automatically, but you can also initiate additional removals manually from your Aura account. For brokers we can’t automate — like those with anti-bot protections — Aura offers assisted removals that you can trigger yourself. Whether automatic, manual, or assisted, these requests are tracked in your dashboard and show up as “completed” or “available.”
Are there types of information Aura can't remove?
Aura removes information like court records and property details when they appear on data broker sites, but it can’t delete the official public records themselves (example, government filings or voter rolls). We also can’t remove data already sold, posted on the Dark Web, or shared on social media.
While Aura supports a large network of brokers, there may be some sites we don’t yet cover — but you can request them through the Aura app.
How does the unused online account cleanup feature work?
Start by going to your Aura dashboard. On web, click Me in the main navigation, then select Digital account cleanup. From there, follow the prompts to connect a Gmail or Outlook inbox. You can link up to five accounts across Gmail and Outlook.
Once connected, Aura scans up to two years of email history to give you a categorized list of accounts tied to your email. You can then review a summary of each account's privacy policy and choose whether to adjust your privacy settings or go to the website to delete your account. You can rescan your inbox at any time.
