Take the Stress Out of Your Family’s Online Safety

Modern day parents have so much to worry about whether it be family finances, kids’ education, household management, and much more. Oftentimes, this means that family online safety gets put on the back burner. In today’s digital world, kids are online at younger ages and often parents don’t have a clear line of sight into what their kids are doing online. Further, many don’t proactively arm their kids with tools they need to spot threats and keep themselves safe online.

Aura found in its inaugural Digital Crime Index that 75% of parents are concerned about their children’s online activity. To dig deeper, Aura conducted a survey in collaboration with Ipsos of 255 American parents to find out how often they worry about their kids’ online activity, what potential dangers they are worried about, and if they feel comfortable starting age appropriate conversations with their kids about the dangers of online crime.

Aura’s findings include:

• 51% of American moms with kids under the age of 18 think about their family’s online safety more than once a week, while 65% of American fathers take a more active role in managing the family’s household’s online security.
• 38% of mothers say they worry about their sensitive information being compromised online more than once a week, whereas only 29% of fathers say they worry more than once a week.
• Parents of tweens (ages 7-12) are more likely to think about their family’s online safety more than once a week (46%) than parents of teenagers or children under 6 (42%).
• On average, 31% of parents are concerned about their kids spending unauthorized money online without parental consent.

1 in 5 American parents with children under 18 say that they rely on their internet provider to manage their household’s online security. But more than half of American parents with children under 18 are only having conversations with their kids about online safety about once a month, or less frequently.

What is the solution?

The question is, how can parents make online safety a priority for their families while also mitigating the stress that is caused by worrying about their children’s information being compromised?

Although there are plenty of cybersecurity solutions available that protect individuals from having their identity or financial assets compromised, there aren’t many readily available solutions that allow parents to proactively protect their children from the harms of being online unsupervised.
